Making The Widow MacDonald At Parrish 2007 #4 : The Widow Dehlia Rose MacDonald was on "her" way to pick up her only son's body who was killed at Shiloh. Her late husband was killed outside Gettysburg. Here's how it began: It all began with one of my weekly phone calls I make to Gred Theurer. I asked if he was going to the Parrish Train Raid and he said "Yes, but I don't know what I'll do because my artillery unit won't be there." I said "Just dress in your uniform and ride on the train and enjoy the weekend". He said, kiddingly, "Maybe I'll dress up like a woman." My brain immediately began cranking and I said, "We could do a spy scenario where you are dressed up like a widow to fool the enemy". He said, "Oh, I don't know if I could pull it off". I said, "Leave it to me, Gred, you will definitely pull it off." He said o.k. I immediately got in touch with my girlfriends, Mary Ables and Lynn Camden and Gred had no choice but to comply with three scheming women... Gred practiced his voice and his story for several weeks before the Train Raid and pulled it off perfectly. It wasn't until later on the train ride on Sunday morning that some reenactors discovered that the Widow Dehlia Rose MacDonald was Gred Theurer, spy, who stole pistols from those he came into contact with. While Mary, Lynn and I were dressing Gred, Renee' Sherman-Miller of the 3rd Maine Co. F Infantry came over to my camp to ask if we needed anything to complete the impression. We told her that we needed undersleeves and a petticoat and gloves. She said she had those with her, was gracious enough to let us borrow them and we were in business! As Renee', Mary, Lynn & I dressed Gred Sunday morning we were laughing so hard at times we had to stop briefly. We completed the transformation just in time to board the train and begin our charade. Here's what he wore: Sandy Varner's mourning hat that Mary Ables had borrowed; Mary Ables' veil, hoop & broach; Renee' Sherman-Miller's petticoat, undersleeves & gloves; Kathy Heitman's mourning skirt; Wal-Mart women's blouse; Dollar Store hair net. All the photos in this gallery were taken by my husband, Jack Heitman. My cockapoo, Tater, supervised and Mike Ables and Ro Camden offered suggestions. Enjoy! "The Picture Lady"

Battle of Olustee 2007 Friday Skirmish : On beautiful Lake DeSoto in Lake City, FL, two replicas of the Civil War ironclads CSS Virginia (Merrimac) and USS Monitor battled it out while infantry, cavalry waged war along the shoreline. There were artillery crews present as well. The skirmish of infantry and cavalry reenacted the skirmish that led to the Battle of Olutee.

Townsend's Plantation Raid 2007 #1 : This event is held annually the first weekend of February north of Orlando, FL on Hwy. 441 a couple of miles from Mt. Dora on the grounds of Renninger's Flea Market in Mt. Dora, FL. The reenactment is set on hilly acreage with plenty of room for artillery, infantry & cavalry. You can attend the reenactment and shop for bargains at the Flea Market. This is one of the smaller events but is packed with excitement. The battlefield is set up to afford the spectators a great view no matter where they sit. Reenactors like this event - there is a lot of artillery, infantry & cavalry action during the battles on both days. The 97th Regimental String Band supplies the entertainment before and after the battles and at the period Dress Ball on Saturday night of the event in the pole barn at the bottom of the hill by the entrance to the property. There are a couple of sequences that, if left out, they would lose their impact. ******************** This was the 6th year for the annual Raid On Ft. Pierce, FL. It is always held the first weekend of December at the Savannas Recreation Area on Midway Rd. in Ft. Pierce, St. Lucie Co., FL, on the east coast. The 8th FL Vol. Inf. Reg't. Co. C & 75th Ohio Vol. Inf. Reg't. are the host companies. All proceeds from the weekend go to the St. Lucie Co. Sheriff's Explorer Post #400. The Post is in attendance, doing various jobs to help in whatever capacity they can and provide a food tent for reenactors and public. The St. Lucie Co. Bomb Squad provides the pyrotechnics. This year they were spectacular with explosions sending dirt & debris several stories high. ******************** Next year's Raid On Ft. Pierce will be held Nov. 30-December 2, 2007. It promises to be even more exciting. The Savannas Recreation Area is 6.2 miles east of I-95 at 1400 Midway, Rd., Ft. This annual event at the Rodeheaver Boys Ranch, Palatka, FL is held the weekend before Thanksgiving. Dwight Dovel of the First Florida Batallion went above & beyond this year, spending 9 consecutive weekends (driving around 6 hrs. round-trip each time) constructing the 1860's town of Baldwin, FL with the help of friends. Please stop Dwight the next time you see him to say "Thank You" for the dedication and hard work he put into this endeavor this year.
